Lancaster/Baltimore/Cape May...October '08...Day 3

We spent most of Monday making our way out of the Lancaster area south towards Baltimore. We did make 2 more quick stops in the area...

While driving through Strasburg came across the Red Caboose Motel. This place was the result of someone's brilliant idea to turn several old cabooses into individual motel rooms. We really dug that they kept the original paint jobs from all the various train lines these cabooses came from...even if they were reproduction, we thought they were still very kool.

The adjoining restaurant, which consisted of 2 rail cars that sat side-by-side.

The Fulton Theater in downtown Lancaster. I'm a sucker for great old theaters and movie houses.

We eventually stopped at a Days Inn outside of Baltimore, where we spent Monday night. Dinner was had at a Cheeseburger in Paradise with dessert grabbed from the Krispy Kreme located next to our hotel.

Our stop in Baltimore the following day was extremely brief...

The Bromo-Seltzer Tower located in downtown Baltimore. Originally part of the Bromo-Seltzer factory, now a tower full of artists' lofts. Just a short distant away was...

Camden Yards, the home of the Baltimore Orioles. I think this is an absolutely gorgeous park. I could definitely see making another trip down there to catch a game next season.

Cal Ripken's Number 8 sculpture/monument thingie. In the background you can some of the others that were scattered about the area outside of Gate H. Also located in the area was...

This statue of Babe Ruth, a Baltimore native son.

Located directly adjacent to Camden Yards was the Geppi Entertainment Museum. A stop worthy of its own post.

Lancaster/Baltimore/Cape May...October '08...Day 2

We spent a relaxing first night at the Apple Bin Inn, ate our fill of peach pancakes and then set out for the day...

We saw more cows in the 2+ days in Lancaster County than we had seen in the past 10 years total.

Lancaster County...Tragic & Magic!
This was an actual working Amish farm at one point and the Target came along later obviously. The tour we took of the Farm was very kool.

and the Amish master bedroom

The tour was also informative...
The term "Red Tape" referring to the complications of government business came from the fact that back in the 1700's government documents were tied up with specially designated handmade red twill tape. This tape signified the importance of the paper. "To cut through all this Red Tape" came from opening the red tape binding and getting to the document.

The smokehouse...Break Out The Ribs!

WHOSE RIBS?!?!

Don't forget to feed the kids.

Speaking of kids, the 1-room schoolhouse. Amish kids legally only need to go to school until the 8th grade.

One of the many covered bridges in Lancaster County. The woman to my right in the other window was using an E.M.F. detector, doing a little ghost hunting apparently.

Some early fall color

The Canadiana Motor Inn. A kool mid-century modern throwback across from the Amish Farm on Lincoln Highway/Rt. 30...I'm a HUGE fan of mid-century modern anything.

Speaking of classics, we stumbled upon this beauty in the cafe next door to the National Christmas Center in Paradise, PA. 3 plays for a quarter and nothing newer than the early 70's.

The 1940's exhibit at the Christmas Center

Another covered bridge

Since the Amish still don't like having their picture taken, we tried to be discreet.

A kool little mid-century modern house near Bird-in-Hand. This type of picture will be continually popping up on this blog.

I call this one, "Wendy with Bridge"

Lancaster/Baltimore/Cape May...October '08...Day 1

Hey! This is the first post of our new blog that allows us to share the photos of our road trips with our friends and family.

We're Wendy and Rob Kramer. We love to drive and thankfully have a new (bought in June '08) Honda Fit. Most of our free time is spent out on the road with our camera in our hands...so here's our first entry.

Over the course of a recent 5-day weekend, we drove from Hoboken, NJ (home) to Lancaster County, PA, then onto Baltimore, MD and Cape May, NJ. The initial drive was done along (or what remains of it) old Lincoln Highway, the first transcontinental roadway in the US...
